Thanks to everyone who came to my presentation at NIWeek 2011. It was great to see so much interest, and I was especially happy to see a lot of NI people there. I hope everyone gleaned something to make you more successful in the LabVIEW Ecosphere.

If you’re like me, it’s easy to think of social media and forums as just a big hole in the internet you throw your productivity into. But that’s not always true – spending time socializing on LAVA, the NI Forums, etc., can be a great way to increase technical knowledge and build your own professional standing and confidence.

What tools tips and tricks do you use to stay connected to the LabVIEW community? Leave a comment below and tell the world.

Presentation Highlights
Even if you’re already plugged into the LabVIEW Ecosystem, skip to Slide 23 to see LabVIEW Block Diagrams that illustrate helpful techniques and tools for staying involved with the community (it’s easier if you view the slideshow full screen). You’ll also find an introduction to my favorite tools for staying plugged into The Discussion — RSS feeds and Google Reader.

During the presentation, I also introduced LVFeed. LVFeed is a bundle of RSS feeds designed to keep you engaged with interesting LabVIEW content. Check out slide 35 to get started.

Title: The Business Side of Social: Put the LabVIEW Community to Work for You

Abstract: The LabVIEW Ecosystem offers a wealth of “social media” resources — so many that it can sometimes be hard to find the technical information you really need. Jack Dunaway will share his secrets on how to get a great return on time invested in the LabVIEW Community. Learn how to equip yourself with online tools that give you the inside scoop on the latest engineering techniques and keep you at the top of your game.

National Instruments marked a big milestone at NIWeek 2011: 20 years of the NI Alliance Partner Network.

JKI joined the Alliance program almost 9 years ago. We love the relationship we’ve built with NI over that time, and we’re delighted to share in the celebration. NI has been a huge part of JKI’s success, and we definitely wouldn’t be the same company without them.

That’s why we were excited when NI asked our CEO, Jim Kring, to discuss what it means to be part of the NI Alliance Partner Network. In the interview, Jim and some other NI partners (Alfamation and Cal-Bay Systems) describe the services they offer to customers and the impact the Alliance program has had on their business. The video was shown at the NIWeek 2011 keynotes, and now you can watch it below.

Congratulations to NI and to all the Alliance member companies on 20 great years! We can’t wait to see what happens next.

First, I’d like to thank everyone who attended my presentation at NIWeek 2011. I know that the room was a schlep for everyone since it was not in the typical presentation area, so I was really excited that the session was full! I’d also like to thank Michael Aivaliotis for helping me with impromptu technical support and a special guest appearance during the presentation with great comments about his own debugging tricks and tips.

This presentation came about after I was working with several other JKI Engineers and it became obvious that many of us were using debugging techniques that others had forgotten or never knew existed. We recorded a live screencast of the session and will upload it once we’ve got it ready, but for those who’d like to review the slides or download the code now, check them out below.

Do you any super-secret debugging techniques of your own? Share them in the comments below.

Example code requires LabVIEW 2011.

Example code depends on several free LabVIEW add-on libraries. To install these libraries, use VI Package Manager 2011 Community Edition to “apply” the included VI Package Configuration file. See Secret #3 in this JKI blog post for more information.

Example code includes a free trial version of the EasyXML Toolkit for LabVIEW. The full version of EasyXML costs $99 and is a 2011 LabVIEW Add-on of the Year.

If you went to NIWeek last week, you’re probably spending this week like the JKI team: digging out from under an ever-burgeoning pile of neglected tasks. Hopefully you’re having more success than I am at keeping the Hydra at bay – every time I dispatch one thing, it seems that two more crop up in its place!

It was an outstanding and busy week, and in the hubbub, we didn’t have time to post our first-day-of-NIWeek Live Wires newsletter here on the blog, so here it is now.

Take a look at Live Wires to check out the latest LabVIEW Community and JKI happenings! This newsletter is an “NIWeek special,” so if you didn’t make it to the conference, you can catch up on some of the exciting news and events. And if you did attend, you might have missed some of these tidbits.

Better yet, sign up to receive the newsletter directly (don’t worry, we won’t spam you incessantly – it only goes out every few months). After you read it, we’d love to hear your thoughts on how to make it even better! What other articles would you like to see? What are you sick of seeing? Leave a comment and tell us…

Thank you to everyone who packed the room for my NIWeek 2011 presentation last week, especially those of you who sat on the floor! The questions and discussion were great, and I’m sorry we only had an hour to kill together.

If you missed my talk, or if you just can’t get enough, don’t worry; the slides and sample code are now available for download below. If you’re interested in interprocess communication in LabVIEW, or if you just want to see a novel use for LabVIEW’s User Events, please give this framework a try! And as always, comments/questions/criticism are encouraged. Join the discussion below.

If this is your first exposure to the JKI State Machine, welcome! The JKI State Machine is a simple yet flexible and powerful template that forms the backbone of everything we do at JKI. You can use it for free in all your projects. Visit our JKI State Machine pages to get started.

NIWeek 2011: Beyond State Machines / Building Modular Applications in LabVIEW (JKI)

Title: Beyond State Machines: Building Modular Applications in LabVIEW

Abstract: Nearly every significant LabVIEW application uses multiple loops and several pieces of hardware. Coordinating these moving pieces can create a recipe for unreadable code. Learn how to use a template for interprocess communication based on “public” and “private” events that is easy enough for intermediate developers but powerful enough for Certified LabVIEW Architects.

Download Slides & Code: niweek-2011-jki-beyond-state-machines.zip (4.5 MB)

Notes:
Example code requires LabVIEW 2009 or later.
Example code requires the JKI State Machine. Install the JKI State Machine using the free VIPM 2011 Community Edition if you don’t already have it.

If you’re an NIWeek veteran, you might already know the unofficial “fun” schedule. If you’re a newbie, you’ll be delighted to know there’s something cool going on almost every night. You just need to know where to look…

Saturday night (July 30)
NI throws their Sales Conference the weekend before NIWeek. So if you happen to be in town super-early, text your friendly NI Sales folks Saturday night after dinner to find the party. Or just go wandering around downtown and keep an eye out. Buffalo Billiards and Maggie Mae’s on 6th Street are typical haunts, as are Cedar Street and Fado Irish Pub on 4th Street.

For additional haunts, check out this handy Map of Cool NIWeek Spots that Mark Balla (@mballa) posted on the LAVA Forum.

Sunday night (July 31)
Approx 8pm: If you’re in town Sunday night, join your LAVA friends at The Ginger Man for an informal pre-conference warm-up. Drop by and grab a few beers before things get hectic! There’s no official time for this, but generally people start wandering in at 8pm or so. Check the LAVA NIWeek forum to see if people are talking about it!

Monday night (August 1)
5:30-7pm: Don’t miss the NIWeek Kick-off Party in the Expo hall – free BEvERages on NI. This year NI celebrates the 20th anniversary of theAlliance program, so there just might be an even bigger party than usual…

Tuesday night (August 2)
5-7pm: Enjoy another night of free food, beer, and music on NI at the Community Block Diagram Party and Happy Hour in the Expo hall. You can watch the Challenge the Champions contest in the Technology Theater, participate in the third annual expo floor scavenger Hunt starting at the Connect @NIWeek lounge, or play with robots and meet robotics mentors who want to make a difference in the engineering industry.

If you want to Challenge the Champions on interactive trivia yourself, sign up in the LabVIEW Zone. You can catch the Coding Challenge finals on Thursday from 12-1pm in the Technology Theater.

7-9pm: 2011 LAVA/OpenG NIWeek BBQ – Celebrating its 10th year! Eat, drink and be merry with your LAVA and OpenG friends with delicious BBQ at Austin’s classic Scholz Garden. You don’t need to be a community member – everyone’s welcome! Buy your $30 ticket in advance in this LAVA thread.

8:30pm-?: For the 4th year in a row, the Dan Quinn Band will be performing on the great patio at 4th Street’s Fado Irish Pub in downtown Austin. Dan does an outstanding show – and he’s an NI DSM – so he always draws an enthusiastic crowd.

Wednesday night (August 3)
7-10:30pm: The Big Bash, aka Annual NIWeek Conference Party – a party you don’t want to miss! Food, drinks, and dancin’ fools flow freely here. This year we have the most awesome venue: the brand-new Austin City Limits theater, where concerts are recorded for the popular music series. And it’s right on 2nd Street, so you can very easily walk (no buses this time!).

Thursday night (August 4)
If you haven’t fallen over from exhaustion, rally your new friends and enjoy Austin!

A few tips:

Outside, Austin is HOT this time of year, usually in the 100s. Dress accordingly.

Inside, the AustinConvention Centeris freezing cold. Seriously, it’s like a meat locker. Dress accordingly.

Keep up with the chaos of the NIWeek social activities by following the hashtags #niweek and #lavag on Twitter! We’ll be posting about the latest happenings too – follow us at @jkisoftware. And if you’re having fun, tweet about it and tell the world!

NIWeek 2011 begins next week! All of us at JKI are excited to catch up with old friends again – and make new ones. If you’ll be there, please come find us and say hello. We’ll be camped out in Big Green Booth #923 over by the Embedded Monitoring area (and the lunch tables).

In addition to showing off some cool new stuff in our booth, you’ll also find us presenting various technical sessions. Come soak up the LabVIEW secrets our experts are sharing…

The Business Side of Social: Put the LabVIEW Community to Work for You
Tuesday, August 2nd – 1-2 PM, Room 10C

Jack Dunaway, LabVIEW Champion, Certified LabVIEW Architect, and top contributor to the LabVIEW Idea Exchange, shares his secrets about how to get a great return on time invested in the LabVIEW Community. He’ll also show you how to equip yourself with online tools that give you the inside scoop on the latest engineering techniques to keep you at the top of your game.

Beyond State Machines: Building Modular Applications in LabVIEW
Tuesday, August 2nd – 2:15-3:15 PM, Room 14

Nearly every significant LabVIEW application uses multiple loops and several pieces of hardware… and coordinating these moving pieces can create a recipe for unreadable code. Justin Goeres, Certified LabVIEW Architect and JKI Product Marketing Manager, will teach you how to use a template for inter-process communication based on “public” and “private” events that is easy enough for intermediate developers but powerful enough for Certified LabVIEW Architects.

5 Clever Debugging Techniques for Every LabVIEW Developer
Wednesday, August 3rd – 4:45-5:45 PM, Room 10C

Do you want to be a LabVIEW bug assassin? Do you want to identify, isolate, and fix bugs faster than your coworkers by using clever tricks? Omar Mussa, Certified LabVIEW Architect and Senior JKI Project Engineer, will show you several powerful built-in LabVIEW debugging techniques, ranging from simple tools like Retain Wire Values to the best LabVIEW debugging feature that no one knows about.

Manage Reusable Code and Build Commercial Software with the VI Package Manager
Tuesday, August 2nd – 10:30-11:30 AM, Room 18C or Thursday, August 3rd – 10:30-11:30 AM, Room 18C — pick your favorite time (both sessions are the same.)

Do you need to package your LabVIEW code in reusable components that are easy to track and share with other users, easily install VIs on multiple computers and versions of LabVIEW, or license your LabVIEW packages to quickly turn your code into a commercial product? NI’s Robert Des Rosier, assisted by VIPM Product Manager and JKI Senior Engineer Michael Aivaliotis, will teach you how to set up the most efficient processes for your team to build and distribute VIs and utilities for free.

Bonus for Special People: Chris Roebuck on Data Driven Test
Monday, August 1st at 6:00 PM – by invitation only

Finally, if you’re fortunate enough to have received an invitation to NI’s Test Leadership Forum event, please join one of our favourite customers, Chris Roebuck from Astrium Ltd., to learn about Data Driven Test in the space industry!

Overview

Many organizations have invested heavily in test data management systems. Understanding how your test data can be used to improve the business results involves considering both the nature of your company’s business and how the data should be stored and accessed. This session will cover key performance indicators and tools that can help test engineers improve business results across various stages of the product life cycle.

“That’s all great stuff!” you say. “But what about those legendary NIWeek parties for after-hours fun?” No worries, we’ve got you covered there too. Stay tuned for our upcoming blog later this week, JKI’s Unofficial Guide to NIWeek Fun…

Last week I had the honor of doing another guest appearance on Michael’s VI Shots podcast, this time with my good friends Darren Nattinger from National Instruments and Chris Relf from V I Engineering.

In this episode, we gear up for NIWeek 2011 by discussing why we love NIWeek, what keeps people coming back, and our picks for the best technical sessions and social events of the week. VI Shots continues to do great work, and this episode was a ton of fun to be a part of. Speaking for myself, I can’t believe NIWeek is only ten days away — I can’t wait!

Check out the whole circus here. (Did you know you can also subscribe to VI Shots in iTunes?)

I haven’t listened to the whole episode yet, but I’m told there’s some “bonus material” tacked on to the end. I hope it’s nothing I can’t live down. Or should I say up to?

After the CLA Summit, Jim joined Justin, Michael and me in Austin for some quality time at National Instruments. We spent a few days talking with various groups at NI about how we can collectively promote world domination through adoption of LabVIEW. At the top of the list: making VIPM and the LabVIEW Tools Network more full-featured, easier to use and more accessible to engineers everywhere. Working with LabVIEW R&D and other influential folks to ensure that LabVIEW addresses the needs of power users everywhere was another high priority.

But what’s a trip to NI without a good party?! Springtime in Austin is a lovely time for a BBQ, so JKI threw one on NI’s lawn…

The good times brought back fabulous memories of NIWeeks past.

Wow! What a great NIWeek! The whole JKI team had a great time at NIWeek 2010, and it was completely worth all the sleep we lost running hard to get ready for it. We hope all our friends around the LabVIEW Ecosystem enjoyed it as much as we did, and for those who weren’t able to make it to Austin, we’re sorry we missed you!

NIWeek 2010 was a big event for JKI. It was probably our biggest NIWeek ever:

We released VIPM 2010, a huge update to VI Package Manager that dramatically expands its scope of LabVIEW add-ons VIPM can create. It also makes VI Package building available in VIPM Community Edition so you can build and share your own LabVIEW add-ons for free.

We announced that VIPM 2010 is now the official download vehicle of the LabVIEW Tools Network.

We launched our new web site and logo (and got some sweet new polo shirts).

JKI Engineer Justin’s Popcorn Tweets demo was the hit of the LabVIEW Community Zone.

JKI Engineers led or participated in six different technical or hands-on sessions.

JKI Founder Jim Kring accepted the LabVIEW “Add-on of the Year” award on behalf of OpenG.
